This newest release by Mimi Matthews has everything: an enemies to lovers romance; a murder mystery; and a plot that streams along like a well-mannered, indeed perfectly proper, action adventure. No time is wasted before Nell and Miles, justifiably wary of each other, find themselves inexorably joined. Then they discover their separate inquiries are joined. Then they discover each other, and a tender but powerful love grows to transform their inconvenient marriage.

The mores of Victorian society permeate the story. Nell is determined to succeed in her mission despite societal limitations on women. Miles is determined to flourish as a newspaperman, a professional, and a gentleman, after raising himself up from the gutters of London.

The writing itself, as always with Mimi Matthews, is simply gorgeous. She has a true gift for conveying thoughts, feelings, and settings, without needing to interrupt the flow of the narrative.

This is a wonderful book, perfect for when you just need a very good story to read, with engaging characters who have integrity, intelligence, dreams, and persistence, and who learn that they also have each other.
